Hello, I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook.
More than half a million voters cast ballots last Tuesday.
That's more than in any other New Hampshire Primary.
But this was also an election where New Hampshire voters declared their independence.

Various polling shots/sounds
N1- They came out on Primary day in record numbers. Registered Republicans - Democrats -- and Independent voters.
Arthur Barrett Poll Moderator - Phil - "Why the high turn out today? Arthur - Do you live in NH? So do I. Has your phone been ringing? So has everyone else's. People are stirred up and have become motivated. It's the NH way."
N2-. For some people, the decision on who to vote for was an easy one.
McCain voter -
Obama voter -
Huckabee voter -
N3- For other voters, it was a case of wait and see.
Trisha Bouthot - Did it take you long? Yes - I had it right down to noon…"
Margo Burns - "I waited until in voting booth…"
N4- The largest single group of voters in the state are independents. Registered as neither Republicans nor Democrats they make that decision once they're at the polling station.
Christopher Riendeau - decided to go with McCain…
Trishia Bouthot clip - This was tough because…
Susan Hartford - went with Clinton in last minute…
Sound from McCain speech referencing the media
N6- Polls, pundits and voices from the media - they're meant to provide clarity for voters. Sometimes yes. Sometimes no.
Richard clip - Did you expect this tonight?

One event that drew a lot of attention came too late in the race for its impact to be measured in the polls.
But did it sway voters?
On Monday, Hillary Clinton was addressing supporters at a coffee shop in Portsmouth and became emotional when asked how she managed to stay upbeat during the long campaign.

Some surprising comments coming from inside the campaign. Dante, is this really the first time we saw the human side of Hillary Clinton?
Did that really have an impact on the outcome? How?
James, you were on the campaign practically every single day.
Do you agree with McAuliffe? Was this a turning point for Clinton? Why or why not?
Andy, Dante: How important is this "human" factor?
This was a big victory for Clinton whose own team was convinced of a second place finish. What did she do in the final days to turn things around?
Andy, we've learned a lot of women came out in support of Clinton. How important was the female vote?

NAT SOUND Obama chanting –
They treated Barack Obama like a rock star.
TAKE SOT – Mackenzie Rawcliffe, Maine Obama Volunteer - Romney tape 1
00:19:41We want to be proud of being Americans, because that’s what we’ve always been. We’ve been the leaders. So we want to find someone who’s going to lead us
Young fans couldn’t push Obama to victory, though . Maybe because some were just a little too young.
NAT SOUND – Romney Tape 1
00:20:28 If we could vote, we would vote for Obama. Cheer.
VO – Paul b roll
Republican candidate Ron Paul also made a strong pitch for the You Tube generation.
TAKE PAUL SOT – CNN
Your generation, young people in this country have awakened and this is going to be something very big for this country.
VO – McCain B roll
But the other 70 year old candidate got the biggest chunk of the Republican youth vote. One McCain supporter says it’s about character.
TAKE SOT - Lianna French, McCain Supporter
7:08:36 – mccain tape 1
His honesty. Every time I’ve seen him, I’ve seen that he can be in a room with a lot of people and he might not say the most popular thing – but he’s “straight talk express”.
VO – Clinton, Edwards b roll
Democrats wooed young voters with promises of change.
Some young republicans had a different take on what’s important.
TAKE SOT – James Newton, First Time Voter
00:12:56Experience. I mean change is good, but you need an experienced person to run the country
TAKE SOT
09:13:23 Alyssa Hinman, Romney Supporter – Romney tape 3
I feel that if you want to make a change, you have to fix what’s broken first. And there are a lot of things in this country that need to be fixed.

How important was the youth vote in deciding the winners on both sides?
Many of the canvassers this time were young people, some coming from cities and towns and colleges all over the country.
Why were so many young people involved this time around?
We heard from a lot of young people who weren't quite old enough to vote. saying they'd vote for Obama. Why do you think he is so popular among so many young people?
